Members often ask: "Why is the union involved in politics?" Our support for laws and candidates that will improve the lives of working people is in keeping with the labor movement's longstanding history as a progressive force. The eight-hour workday, overtime pay, pensions, holidays and sick leave are just a few of the successes that have been achieved through labor's involvement in the political process.

However, as vigorously as we defend your rights in the workplace, many of the protections we take for granted today can be erased with the stroke of a pen. Powerful anti-worker lobbying groups and greedy corporations are relentless in their attempts to weaken the laws protecting workers.

With the support of our members, we will continue to support pro-worker legislation and candidates who are dedicated to strengthening the bargaining power of the working class.

Obama and Sestak Care About Workers

On October 27, 2008 Arthur Manos, the UFCW Local 152 Pennsylvania Political Representative, published an opinion piece in The Delaware County Daily Times responding to accusations made by Craig Williams, the Republican candidate for U.S. Representative for the 7 th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Williams said the proposed tax plan of Democratic PResidental Nominee Barak Obama would result in increases taxes for the majority of small businesses and he challenged people do an Internet search on the facts.

New Jersey Assembly Passed Paid Family Leave

Members of the New Jersey Assembly voted on March 13, 2008 in support of A-873 (Albano/Oliver, Paid Family Leave Legislation). This bill will extend Temporary Disability Insurance to provide family leave benefits for up to six weeks for workers caring for sick family members, newborn and newly adopted children.

The State Senate will be debating the bill within the next couple of weeks and if passed will then go to the Governor to be signed into Law.

Romano for Mayor in Vineland, New Jersey

Local 152 is pleased to announce the endorsement of Robert Romano for Mayor in the City of Vineland. Mr. Romano will face off with current Mayor, Perry Barse who has a long record of not supporting our issues including the building of a new Wal-Mart Superstore opening in Vineland in October of 2008. Mr. Romano has pledged to work with our members and support your union issues.

Local 152 has partnered with the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and launched a new website where we ask our members to become a political activist so that we will be able to communicate quickly and effectively with our members on issues that affect our daily lives in New Jersey. Voter Registration Drive Starts April 1st

Union Representatives will be in all of our facilities starting April 1st to ask our members who are non-registered voters to sign up. Over the last year, many Local 152 members have registered to vote and want to become more involved due to the upcoming presidential election. We ask that you please register with your Union Representative or go to www.rockthevote.com to register online.

Local 152's Active Ballot Club (ABC) provides members with protection against anti-union politicians by supporting pro-worker candidates and incumbents. ABC contributions help to make the difference between electing candidates who care about working families and those who do not.
